On Thursday, September 13th, Miriam learned to pull herself up from sitting in her crib to standing. The next day, she was cruising around the crib while holding on to the railing.

Life in Dominica
Since we don't have hot water in our apartment, I heat water for the kids and bathe them in the kitchen sink. They absolutely hate cold showers! I can't blame them. If I could fit in the sink, I would bathe there too.

Dr. Morgan Fife
On Friday, September 7th, Morgan participated in the White Coat Ceremony. They had the Prime Minister of Dominica attend and speak to all the 1st semester medical school students. Then at the conclusion they were instructed to put their white doctor coats on as a way to start them on their journey to becoming a real doctor. The kids and I were too loud so we played outside during the ceremony. But here is the Luke supporting his Dad after the ceremony...

Suitcases and Barrels...What do they have in common?
The Fifes put their kids in them!
It took a week for the town's taxi service to deliver our crib for Miriam. We finally decided to make her a makeshift crib out of our largest suitcase, diapers, towels, and crib bedding. She slept great! The real crib finally arrived and now everyone has their own bed!
Luke loved helping Morgan unpack the barrel we had shipped from home. Luke's job was to help unload all the diapers that were at the bottom and out of Morgan's reach. Now we use the barrel for water storage in the event of future hurricanes. Don't worry...Luke doesn't get to play inside it anymore.

Island Miriam
Here's our Island Miriam with her piercing blue eyes. She is sitting up almost a 100% now. She still has the occasional collapse when she gets too excited or something is out of arms reach.
Arrival on Dominica
After experiencing an almost 12 hour layover in Chicago, missing our hotel reservation in San Juan and losing an evening of sleep, we finally made it to Dominica. Only then did we learn that Hurricane Dean was expected to hit the island that evening. AGGH! Students met us at the airport thinking that we were crazy to be entering the country as they were desperately trying to leave. We were very blessed that members of the Church took us in and let us stay with them through the storm. Hurricane Dean was only a category 2 when it hit here so we were fine. We actually slept through the majority of it since we were so exhausted from traveling here. The day after the storm we went to the beach and actually enjoyed the waves. Generally the Caribbean Sea is quite calm but that day there were waves. We are getting adjusted and Morgan will start school on Monday, Sept. 3rd. This is our anniversary weekend of when he proposed to me 6 years ago this Labor Day. My how the time flies! Hope everyone enjoys the new blog and we will keep you posted with pictures and stories as they come in the days of the Fifes.
